From: Lisa Schweitzer ()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()()() Moon Boots To be Worn on the Enterprise These slippers were designed to be worn as bed socks by my Dear Husband, who, Bless His Heart, has very cold flippers. In fact, they are a sized up version of stay-on baby bootees, which in the larger size remind me of "moon boots". Since not every one has as large an understanding as my DH, the sizes range from (five-inch foot, seven-inch foot, nine-inch foot, and eleven-inch foot). The slipper is slightly oversized for the foot, so that warm air may accumulate between the foot and knitted material. You will need: I used Montera, which has 128 yards per ball. However, I was using leftover yarn, and I still had plenty of the contrast colors left making the largest size. (1,1,1,2) balls main color (1,1,1,2) ball cc1 (1,1,1,1) ball cc2 (1,1,1,1) ball cc3 and Whatever needles give you an approximate gauge of 4 st/inch in stockinette st. Give yourself a break on the gauge. No one is going to run a marathon in these, so if you are at 4.25 or 3.75 st/inch, you are close enough. You will want a 16 circular needle, or set of 5 double point needles, preferably long ones--knitting these on 4 double points would be no fun. Cast on (10,15,15, 20) stitches in MC. Knit back and forth in garter stitch for (4, 6, 8, 10) inches, which works out to roughly (16, 24, 32,40) ridges of garter stitch--but go by the length of inches rather than the number of ridges, because row gauge can vary widely. Congratulations, you have finished the sole of your first moon boot. At this point, knit across "toe" using cc1, which will be the (10,15, 15, 20) stitches on your needle. Now you will pick up one stitch for each ridge of garter stitch along the sole, approximately (16, 24, 32,40) stitches. You will be at the cast on edge, which shall now be the heel. Pick up (10,15, 15, 20) stitches across the heel, and place a safety pin in the first and last heel stitch. and again pick up on stitch for each ridge of garter stitch along the other side of sole---another (16, 24, 32,40) stitches. You will have approximately (52, 78, 94, 120) stitches on your needle, depending on how many ridges of garter stitch you did for the sole. Place a safety pin on the first stitch of the toe to remind you that's the beginning of your round. P 5 rounds cc1. *Using cc2, knit 4 rounds. Using cc1, knit 1 round, purl 5 rounds. * Repeat from ** once more. You are now going to do a series of short rows, back and forth, to create the top of the slipper. Using mc, knit the first (9,14,14,19) stitches of the toe. K2 together through the back of the loop (tbl) , *turn. Slip 1, purl the (8, 13, 13, 18) stitches of the toe, purl 2 together. Slip 1, knit the stitches, k 2 tog tbl.* Repeat from * to * until (3.5 5,6.5, 8) inches of the upper are done, ending with a purl row. Turn the work, Sl 1, place safety pin to remind yourself of the beginning of the round. Knit still using mc past the first safety pin until you reach the second safety pin. k2 tog tbl, *turn. Slip 1, purl the (8, 13, 13, 18) stitches of the heel, purl 2 together. Slip 1, knit the 18 stitches, k 2 tog tbl.* Repeat (4,5,6,7) times, ending with a purl row. Turn, sl 1, and knit all the remaining stitches until you reach the beginning of the round. Knit 1 round main color (yes, there will be a little hole at the first join, which you can sew shut nicely once you are finished.) Join cc 3, and work 8 rounds. The next round you *K2, yarn over, K2 together* and repeat until the end of the round (fudge the yarn overs so that they are evenly distributed if you have odd stitches, or decrease in the previous row to make the yarn overs perfectly distributed). At this point, you may do what you want. I knitted for another 4 inches in ccc 3, but you can make the ankle cuff as long or as ornate as you want (it might be nice to put a simple peerie pattern on the ankle cuff, for instance. I knit six rows in cc 1, and then bound off loosely. I used cc 2 to do a nice, 3 stitch I cord for the tie like so: Cast on 3 stitches cc2, knit 3, *slide 3 stiches to left hand needle (if knitting right handed, reverse if for left), knit.* Repeat until the I cord is long enough to make a comfy tie around the ankles, which will depend on the recipient. Thread the tie through the yarn over holes you made. Weave in ends, and do the second bootie the same as the first, hopefully while drinking coffee and watching the snow fall. Peace. --- This pattern downloaded from Wool Works: the online knitting compendium http://www.woolworks.org/
